Lifestyle and Attractions

Wendell is a small satellite town of Raleigh, which is located about 20 miles to the west. The town is named after American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes, but the name of the town is pronounced “win-DELL”. The town of more than 6,000 has experienced rapid growth, as the population grew by 36 percent between 2000 and 2010. Wendell is an ideal community for those working in Raleigh or the Research Triangle Park area who prefer a more laid-back lifestyle than what the capital city can offer. Additionally, Wendell is home to the headquarters of international companies Siemens and Kioti Tractors.

The town hosts a number of annual events and festivals, including the International Food and Music Festival, the Harvest Festival, an Independence Day Celebration, and a Christmas light show. During the 1850s, tobacco farmers throughout nearby Granville County were hit with what was called the Granville County Wilt, which caused the tobacco crop to fail. The farmers then moved into eastern Wake County in search of fertile land for their crops. A village began to form in this area, and a local schoolteacher named the town Wendell after his favorite poet, Oliver Wendell Holmes. However, members of the community pronounced the town “Win-DELL” rather than the traditional pronunciation of the name Wendell. Wendell, which is still pronounced as such, was incorporated in 1903.
