History
During the 1850s, tobacco farmers throughout nearby Granville County were hit with what was called the Granville County Wilt, which caused the tobacco crop to fail. The farmers then moved into eastern Wake County in search of fertile land for their crops. A village began to form in this area, and a local schoolteacher named the town Wendell after his favorite poet, Oliver Wendell Holmes. However, members of the community pronounced the town “Win-DELL” rather than the traditional pronunciation of the name Wendell. Wendell, which is still pronounced as such, was incorporated in 1903.
